Forsythia

Care for the
Forsythia in Tulsa and surrounding area (zone 6-6b)
Some people consider the blooming of
the forsythia the onset of spring. Lynnwood Gold is the preferred
variety and is available bareroot, containerized or balled and
burlaped. The bareroot is the best value for the price. It can be
planted during the early part of the month of March. Larger plants,
like the 5 gallon size or the 4-6 foot tall balled and burlaped plants
will be available later in the month.
Locate your forsythia plant in a
half-to-full day of sun for optimum growing conditions. Forsythia
grows rapidly and will reach a 6-10 foot bush if left unpruned. They
can be manicured into a bush of smaller proportions if pruned
regularly. Caution -- this pruning must only occur after the blooming
period is over!
Your beautiful first
glimpse of spring can be brought inside. Cut a few budded branches and
bring indoors to force blooming in your home. Enjoy the delicate
flowers of your forsythia!
