FALL PLANTING GUIDE
The data presented in this chart should be used as a
guide only. As more experience is developed in growing vegetables you
may decide that the figures given can be adjusted to better fit your
particular situation.
An explanation of each column follows:
Seed needed to plant 100’ row: Any dry seed not planted may be
stored in deep freeze for future use.
Time to plant: Varies with plant hardiness and requirements,
soil temperature and moisture. Soil is ready for planting when it will
form a ball in the hand that easily breaks.

Depth to plant seed: Many people plant too deep.
Number of seeds to sow per foot: The numbers should assure a
good stand of plants prior to thinning.
Distance between plants: Proper spacing is very important to
prevent crowding and competition. Thin soon after seedlings become
established. The maximum figure given will develop larger plants.
Distance between rows: This assumes weeding will be done by
hand tools.
Number of days to germination: Soil temperature affects speed
of germination. Seed not germinated at the maximum figure should be
replanted.
Soil temperature for seed: Needs cool temperature means 500
to 650F. Tolerates cool soil means 500 to 850F;
and requires warm soil means 650 to 850F.
Remember: This is the temperature of the soil, not the temperature
outside.
Weeks to grow to transplant size: Time required varies with the
temperature.
Days to maturity: Refers to time needed from planting seeds or
transplant to harvest. Times vary according to variety.

1> There may be advantages to planting
earlier if soil moisture and climatic conditions are favorable.

1/2 months after planting the seed. |
