Dracaena

This group of plants is increasingly becoming more and more popular.  The dracaena is a bold and attractive focal point for many areas in the home.  The three most popular and easy to care for dracaenas' are the Janet Craig, Marginata and Massangeana.

Care & Maintenance:

Dracaena MarginataTemperature: Average warmth; minimum of about 55º F. in winter.

Light:  Bright, indirect light is best.  If set outside for summer protect against direct sun and hot winds.

Water:  Keep the soil moist at all times.  Reduce watering in winter, but do not let the plant dry out.

Humidity:  It is important to mist the leaves regularly.

Repotting:  Depending on plant growth, repotting should only be necessary about 2-3 years.

Fertilizer:  A good water soluble fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro® is fine for your dracaena. Always follow recommendations of manufacturer.

Quick Tips:  Mealy Bugs

  • Leaves with brown tips is usually a sign of dry air.  Misting is important.
  • Remember: Lower leaves will yellow with age.
  • If you have brown spots on the leaves this could be a sign of under-watering.  The soil must be kept moist.  This may also be a sign of aphids; especially if it is on the underside of the leaf.
  • Leaves that are bleached out looking is usually a sign of too much sun.  Move to a shadier spot immediately.
  • Mealy bugs and aphids are two insect pests to watch out for.  Mealy bugs appear as a whitish cottony substance on the plant; and aphids will appear as black, brown or reddish spots on the leaves.  Aphids may also excrete a sticky substance.
