Nature normally produces its vital seed crops during the summer
months. As the fall turns to winter, natures cro
p
of seeds begins to diminish becoming shorter and shorter in supply as
the winter wears on. And remember...it is mid to late summer before a
new crop of seeds appear in any quantity. One of the simplest ways to
attract birds to your yard is by supplementing their natural food
sources. To attract the greatest variety of bird species, a feeding
program should offer a variety of food. There are four primary food
categories: seeds, fruits, suet and sugar water.
Most birds feel more comfortable with feeders that are located near
cover (brush piles, shrubbery or trees). However, if you have cats, or
your neighbors have cats it’s a good idea to keep the feeders a little
further from cover. A good rule of thumb is about 5’ from cover of
some kind.
Most people are probably not aware of the various preferences by
most birds. When buying seed look for more preferred foods such as
sunflower seeds and millet. Also remember there are those birdies that
like suet and fruit. Always keep your seed stored in a galvanized or
plastic container to deter rodents, insects and spoilage.
Never underestimate the importance of water even during the winter
months. Why? Bird feathers contain interlocking webs known as
barbules. When in place, the se feathers shut out the cold and
provide insulation. It is essential for the feathers to be clean for
this interlocking system to work properly; therefore birds actually
bathe more in winter. One major problem is to keep the water from
freezing. The most efficient and convenient way is with a immersible
heater specially designed for outdoor use.
